Role Reversal

Mom and MeWide Awake in Miami at 2:30 am and my mind and heart are in overdrive.  How did time pass so fast…when did I become an “old person”?  I still feel, think and act like a thirty-something but it’s a whole lot of years since I saw 30.  If I have aged, that means that my Mom has too…and that’s what has me Wide Awake in Miami.  The roles are getting reversed and I wonder if I am prepared, if I am strong enough to take on that role. My parents took such good care of me, loved me, protected me, made sure I had what I needed to be healthy and happy…can I now do the same for my Mom?  Wide Awake in Miami and thinking, wondering and praying that I can be what my Mom deserves…that I can take on the role.

That Full Moon is to Blame

My fascination with the moon, especially the Full Moon, was kicked into overdrive last night with the appearance of the “Pink Moon” over Key Biscayne.   Pink Moon 1

Moon watchers in Europe, Africa and Asia were able to catch a view of a full moon and an eclipse at the same time on Thursday, April 25…not here in North America…but we did have an incredible Full Moon!

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names.

Full Pink Moon – April This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

Three hours pass…

Full Moon 4.25.13

I opening admit that I have an inexplicable fascination with the moon and especially the Full Moon.  My wide awake morning hours are spent with a good cup of piping hot coffee, listening to the quiet on my patio, mentally organizing my upcoming day and looking up.  Looking up at the moon…the big beautiful full moon of April.  Three hours pass and the moon rotates, drops in the sky and the glow goes from bright white to a rich gold.  Three hours pass and I have enjoyed more cups of coffee than I care to admit to and my to do list has been organized and prioritized.  Three hours pass and I have probably clocked one mile walking round and round my backyard keeping my little dog company as he inspects and marks every single solitary blade of grass.  Three hours pass and I am bidding the Full Moon adieu as it sets behind the roofline of my neighbor’s house…soon the Full Moon will be replaced by a glorious sunrise and the beginning of another busy busy day.  Three hours pass and my to do list has a final entry: Be thankful for another day.

A very special thanks go out to my friend Danielle who inspired me…thanks!
